What are Circle of Parents Groups? |
|
|
The heart of our organization is a network of parent and children's support groups called Circle of Parents that meet weekly across the state. These community and agency partners are known as Chapters. All groups operate on a shared leadership model with parent participants, and provide non-judgmental support to parents as well as organized programming for children. Select this link for the current list of Minnesota Circle of Parents Groups. The parent support groups help parents to improve their parenting skills and strengthen their family relationships. During weekly meetings, parents share the challenges and successes of child rearing. Group meetings provide opportunities for parents to exchange ideas, meet other parents, and talk about their feelings in safe and supportive surroundings. To learn more about Circle of Parents, please call Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota at (651) 523-0099 or (800) 621-6322. You may also email us at pcamn@pcamn.org.

We started a new Circle of Parents group in Mankato this September, and one of our facilitators was recently interviewed for a local TV station. Click here to watch the video clip (sorry about the beginning commercial). There was also a recent newspaper article about this group. Follow this link to read the article.

How to Start Parent and Children's Groups |
|
|
|
All groups begin with a personal visit from a coordinator near you. Your coordinator will help you develop your chapter and provide training and technical assistance before you form your group. The following trainings are offered for new chapters:
We have developed a one-day training for the mutual self-help Circle of Parents Facilitators and Parent Group Leaders. This training builds on the strengths of the past by providing greater opportunity to practice skills, increase knowledge of how groups work and become even more grounded in the values of mutual help, shared leadership and family support. The training will combine experiential activities, discussion, presentations, and stories.
The Children's Program training is for new children's program leaders and assistants. The children’s program training includes:
-
Roles and responsibilities of volunteers
-
Mandated reporting
-
Children's resiliency
-
Positive approaches to children
-
Establishing activity structure and routines

We develop parent leaders in our parenting groups with the goal of fostering leadership skills that transfer to their Chapters and communities. This effort extends to the governance of our organization in which our Parent Leadership Team serves alongside our Board of Directors. The Parent Leadership Team provides valuable guidance from the perspective of active or past parent program participants. Follow this link to our Parents as Civic Leaders Web page.
